Heathrow Airport run a bespoke “Pod-Guideway system” to transport Business customers to Terminal 5. This specially designed system requires on going maintenance provided by Pod-Trak.
Pod-Trak was tasked with repairing areas of tarmac that were starting to fail at entrance to guideway ramps as well as replacing old foam nosing that area used to assist in the safe movement of automatous vehicles from the car park to Terminal 5.
These nosing guides reflect the laser guidance system that runs the pod system from the business car park to Terminal 5. During a weekend planned maintenance possession, Pod-Trak mobilised teams to carry out works over a 27 hour window and split into 3 overlapping 10 hour shifts.
On first shift, failing tarmac was removed and new tarmac re-laid. On second and third shifts, Old nosing were removed from their locations and new nosing installed as per original design. These
were coated in a UV protective paint and fixed to ground using a bitumen adhesive and special dowel rods to allow for the buffering and guidance of the pod units.
