Horley Station Underpass Deck Replacement Completed

Pod-Trak has successfully completed the replacement of the steel deck over the subway at Horley Station in Sussex, working on behalf of Southern Renewals Enterprise (SRE) and VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd.

Delivered as part of Network Rail’s ongoing renewals programme, the project involved a multidisciplinary scope of works, including full track removal and reinstatement, 3rd rail works, and civils activities to remove the old steel deck and install new precast concrete cills and deck units. Passenger services were restored as planned, with the line handed back safely at the end of the possession.

The works were delivered during a 58-hour blockade on the Slow Lines, with the Fast Lines remaining open for 28 hours, requiring detailed planning and constant coordination between multiple disciplines.

Pod-Trak worked closely with the Principal Contractor to optimise the construction programme, ensuring that Gatwick Express services remained unaffected over the Christmas blockade period. Collaboration was key to identifying and mitigating emerging design challenges, including the interface between the concrete slab and Delkor rail support fittings, where Pod-Trak assisted the design team to achieve compliance and maintain programme.

Throughout delivery, Pod-Trak utilised its in-house civil engineering, rail systems, and plant resources, allowing greater control, flexibility, and quality assurance. The approach also provided support to other subcontractors – including HV protection and rail systems specialists – helping the Principal Contractor maintain progress despite late-stage changes and weather constraints.

Stephen Given, Managing Director, said:
“This project highlights the strength of our multidisciplinary capability and the collaboration between our teams and the Principal Contractor. By using our internal resources effectively, we delivered safely, efficiently and without disruption to key passenger services.”
