Pod-Trak successfully delivered a £6m programme across the MerseyRail network to support the introduction of new Stadler-built rolling stock. Working in collaboration with VolkerRail, the Power Supply Upgrade included the design and construction of new Distribution Network Operator (DNO) compounds, substations, and associated routeworks at multiple locations. The works were undertaken across a 75-mile operational network, improving power capacity and resilience to accommodate the increased electrical demand of the upgraded train fleet.
Delivery was carried out within a live operational environment across numerous sites including Birkenhead North, Bromborough, Hillside, and Mickering Lane. Each location presented unique challenges ranging from tight urban spaces to complex ground conditions. At Hillside, temporary works were installed to manage unstable sandy soils, while at Bromborough, weekend possessions and isolations were used to manage access around the railway. At Mickering Lane, a new haul road and compound were built to support extensive earthworks and directional drilling where conventional UTXs were unfeasible.
Pod-Trak implemented efficient construction methodologies to accelerate delivery while minimising disruption to rail operations and the public. The use of directional drilling reduced the need for deep excavations, improving safety and programme certainty. Standardised DNO compound designs improved quality consistency across multiple sites, and advanced temporary works design ensured stability in constrained locations. Close collaboration with VolkerRail and MerseyRail stakeholders ensured seamless integration of new assets into the existing network, providing a robust and future-ready power supply system.
