Pod-Trak was engaged by Balfour Beatty Rail to deliver critical embankment stabilisation works at Lower Stoke after a significant slump caused a 2 m high back scarp in the Up cess. The affected area extended approximately 17 m wide and 19 m down the slope, requiring urgent structural intervention to prevent further deterioration and protect railway integrity.
To restore stability, Pod-Trak installed a king post retaining wall system at the toe of the embankment, comprising 7.5 m UC steel beams with precast concrete panel infills. The works were completed safely and efficiently while maintaining public access and protecting nearby parkland.
During excavation, the team identified that the original design sequence was not feasible due to the extent of the slumped ground. Following consultation with the client, Pod-Trak revised the methodology to install the king post wall first, providing immediate stabilisation and enabling subsequent safe excavation and backfilling.
The ground investigation data provided was inaccurate, requiring rapid adaptation and re-selection of plant and equipment to maintain progress.
With over 2,000 tonnes of imported aggregates and 1,000 tonnes of muck-away, efficient logistics and supply chain management were essential. Pod-Trak’s procurement team maintained real-time material tracking, adjusting deliveries to prevent bottlenecks and ensure workflow continuity.
Pod-Trak enhanced project stability and efficiency through a revised construction sequencing that allowed works to progress smoothly despite evolving site conditions. Close coordination between site, design, and procurement teams ensured that changing ground conditions were proactively addressed, while active supplier management enabled just-in-time delivery of critical materials. A strong focus on safety, supported by continuous workforce engagement and monitoring, resulted in zero accidents or incidents throughout the programme. Following completion, the team undertook full environmental reinstatement of the public park, restoring both access and visual amenity — demonstrating a responsible, well-managed, and community-minded approach from start to finish.
