Pod-Trak was appointed by VolkerFitzpatrick as the main subcontractor responsible for delivering the FRC and Civils packages for three new stations on the historic Camphill Line – Moseley Village, Kings Heath, and Hazelwell (Pineapple Road).
The scheme will reintroduce passenger train services to these areas for the first time in over 80 years. Each station includes two platforms, footbridges, lifts, stairs, ticketing facilities, information systems, and secure cycle parking. Moseley and Pineapple Road will also benefit from dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones.
Delivering three new stations within constrained urban rail environments demanded precise planning, logistical expertise, and flexible access strategies.
Two stations were located within deep cuttings, restricting access and requiring the use of engineering trains, blockades, and midweek night possessions to safely move materials and complete construction.
Pod-Trak adopted innovative and cost-efficient delivery methods by replacing traditional crane operations with RRVs, Merlo telehandlers, and excavators for the installation of pre-cast Z-walls, improving site access while reducing overall cost. The concrete mix design was optimised to achieve the right balance of curing time within tight night possessions, ensuring trains could pass safely each morning without delay. Productivity was significantly enhanced by transitioning canopy foundation works to pre-cast solutions, increasing output from just two to eight bases per weekend. This was supported by an integrated and responsive supply chain, with FP McCann, Mabey Hire, and Groundshare providing 24-hour support for precast units and temporary works materials — delivering a seamless, high-performance approach from planning through to installation.
