Agar Grove Bridge Renewal

Project Overview

Pod-Trak was appointed by BAM Nuttall to deliver the Overhead Line Electrification (OLE) works associated with the Agar Grove Bridge Renewal, a complex civil engineering project within a highly constrained rail corridor near St Pancras, London.

The existing Agar Grove Overbridge carried Agar Grove Road across multiple operational tracks on the East Midlands Main Line and Moorgate lines, both electrified at 25kV AC. Due to the deteriorating condition of the structure, the bridge was subject to full reconstruction, requiring complete removal and reinstatement of the OLE system.

Pod-Trak acted as the primary OLE subcontractor, responsible for the full installation, renewal, and commissioning of overhead line systems supporting the new bridge structure and adjacent rail infrastructure.

High Level Scope:

  • De-wiring and protection of existing OLE wires
  • Installation of 35 bridge arms and associated SPS
  • Installation of new bridge bonding systems
  • Renewal of 18 headspans and 27 cantilevers
  • Section insulation and feeding renewal
  • Replacement of SIN 205 insulators
  • RC works and associated civil interfaces

Key Challenges & Solution

The works were delivered in a live rail environment with multiple contractors operating within tight possessions, including a major Christmas and New Year blockade to enable bridge demolition and reconstruction. Pod-Trak developed a fully integrated delivery schedule to align OLE works with BAM Nuttall’s bridge programme, ensuring seamless coordination across civil, electrical, and structural disciplines. Real-time communication between OLE engineers, design consultants (PBH Rail), and Network Rail enabled fast resolution of design queries and approval bottlenecks.

Despite restricted access, complex logistics, and evolving site conditions, the team achieved full installation and handback on schedule – demonstrating the strength of Pod-Trak’s integrated rail delivery model.

Innovation in Action

Innovation was central to delivery success. Pod-Trak deployed modular SPS systems and pre-assembled bridge arms to minimise time spent working at height and to improve installation efficiency. Digital quality assurance and progress tracking tools were implemented across the programme, allowing real-time monitoring, streamlined documentation, and transparent communication between site and design teams.

These innovations enhanced productivity, reduced rework, and established new benchmarks for OLE integration within complex bridge reconstruction projects.
